However, catastrophic tram derailments can still happen as evidenced by the derailment of a tram in Croydon, London in the UK in November 2016, which killed seven people and left many more injured.Figure 8 presents the number of tram running line derailments over the past five years. Figure 9 presents the number of tram running line derailments by point of derailment and extent of derailment over the past two years (since the introduction of NRSDS).There were 19 running line derailments involving passenger trams in the 20232024 financial year in Australia. The precursor events or likely causes of these derailments for the 20232024 financial year are presented in Figure 10.FIGURE 8:In-Service Not in-service Rate 30 30Tram Running Line COUNT OF DERAILMENTSRate (per million passenger tram km)Derailments, July 201925 25to June 2024.20 20Includes derailments of15 15trams on non-running lines affecting the safety of10 10running lines.5 50 0201920 202021 202122 202223 202324 201920 202021 202122 202223 202324PASSENGER TRAIN PASSENGER TRAIN(COMMERCIAL) (TOURIST & HERITAGE)30 ONRSR Rail Safety Report 20232024'
