Safe railways for Australia

Current reviews

Currently the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) is undertaking a number of reviews. These include:

Review of fatigue risk management arrangements under the Rail Safety National Law

In May 2015, Transport and Infrastructure Council approved the scope of the review of the legislative framework for fatigue risk management, with a view to achieving nationally consistent legislation. ONRSR will commence research into appropriate regulatory frameworks for managing fatigue risk and will engage with stakeholders through both a reference group, and broader consultation with industry, unions and governments.

In 2017, stakeholders agreed to a revised timeframe of May 2018 for submission of the final report detailing the findings and recommendations to Transport and Infrastructure Council.

The reference group has agreed terms of reference for the review.

Review of the legislative framework for drug and alcohol management

ONRSR conducted public consultation as part of the review it is undertaking on behalf of the Transport and Infrastructure Council of the drug and alcohol provisions within Rail Safety National Law.

A final report and recommendations will be submitted to the Transport and Infrastructure Council for consideration at its November 2017 meeting.

More information is available in the review scope and terms of reference.
