Safe railways for Australia

New accreditation

A Rail Transport Operator (RTO) may apply to the National Rail Safety Regulator (NRSR) for accreditation in respect of any rail operations carried out or which are proposed to be carried out. A requirement of accreditation is to demonstrate to the NRSR the competency and capacity to implement its safety management system and to safely manage changes to its operations.

The Rail Safety National Law (RSNL) requires that RTOs must apply for and be granted accreditation, in accordance with sections 64 – 67 of the RSNL, before they commence undertaking railway operations.

To apply for accreditation, a RTO must complete the Application for Accreditation Form. This form should be submitted to the Offce of the National Rail Safety Regulator with attached supporting documentation describing their Safety Management System.

For all enquiries relating to new accreditations, please contact or phone 08 8406 1500.
