Safe railways for Australia

The National Operations team are the key interface with the rail industry. Rail safety officers working from branch offices around Australia oversee the full range of regulatory functions covered by the Rail Safety National Law

These functions include:

  • accrediting organisations to carry out rail transport operations
  • conducting compliance and enforcement activities
  • providing education and advice to support compliance and promote safety.

The other key function within National Operations is that of rail information, which manages the national rail safety occurrence dataset. By capturing, analysing and reporting occurrence data, ONRSR can report safety intelligence to industry (including through the annual Rail Safety Report) and also develop a risk-based approach to regulatory activities.
