Safe railways for Australia

The National Operations team are the key direct interface with the accredited rail industry. Rail Safety Officers working under their respective state Branch Directors oversee the full range of regulatory functions covered by the Rail Safety National Law.

These functions include:

  • accrediting organisations to carry out rail transport operations
  • conducting compliance and enforcement activities to ensure rail transport operators meet their obligations for rail safety management
  • providing education and advice to support compliance and promote and facilitate safety improvement.

The other key function within the ONRSR is that of Safety and Risk. This function manages the national rail safety occurrence dataset, including the capture, analysis and reporting of occurrence data. This dataset is used to report key safety intelligence to industry – including through the Rail Safety Report – and also in developing a risk-based approach to regulatory activities within the ONRSR.

A full suite of reports, publications and tools are available in the Resource centre .
